vOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES
bECOME A mOTHER coMPANION
Project MAMA is experiencing unprecedented demand. We are recruiting more volunteer Mother Companions so that we can offer compassionate care to the increasing number of Mamas reaching for our support.
-
Mother Companions provide Mamas with emotional and practical support, from 32 weeks of pregnancy until her baby is 8 weeks old. Through regular visits, they assist a mama to navigate an unfamiliar maternity system, address extreme isolation, and bridge language and cultural barriers.
Mother Companions work in teams of 2-3 volunteers, with support from Project MAMA’s staff.
-
Mother Companions support a mama for around 3 to 4 months, with visits usually taking place every other week. This equates to a time commitment of roughly 4 hours every two weeks.
Volunteers are welcome to take breaks between supporting mamas, depending on what works for them.
-
Mother Companions are required to have experience supporting women during pregnancy, birth, or the postnatal period. This could be as a doula, midwife, antennal educator, health visitor, birth partner, doctor etc.
We are open to different kinds of experience and would love to hear from you if you think you have relevant skills! Please submit an application or contact etti@projectmama.org to chat about the MC role.
Mother Companions also need to:Be willing to undertake a DBS check;
Have a non-judgemental and holistic approach to supporting women from diverse backgrounds;
Be passionate about social justice and promoting maternal rights & wellbeing.
Volunteer at OUR COMMUNITY HUB
MAMAhub is our drop-in group for new and expectant parents and their babes. It is a space where Mamas can enjoy peer support, share a hot meal, and access a variety of activities and advice.
-
MAMAhub volunteers offer practical support at our community drop-in. They set up, prep meals, help with activities, and are welcoming, friendly faces for our Mamas & their babes.
Our drop-ins take place on Wednesday, from 10am -12pm, and Friday, from 11am - 2pm. Volunteers are expected to stay 15 mins before and after each session, to help with setting up and packing down. We require volunteers to commit to attending a minimum of 2 MAMAhub sessions per month.
-
We ask that all our MAMAhub volunteers:
Have a non-judgemental approach to providing support to women from diverse backgrounds;
Are committed to social justice and supporting Mamas to have a positive pregnancy and early parenting experience;
Be willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check.
